Satisfying Consumption: Trade and the Environment

PIEL UK 9th Annual Conference

Thursday, 9th April 2015 • Cass Business School, London

Consumption and trade continue to increase, creating unprecedented environmental challenges. The controversial Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) currently being negotiated behind closed doors threatens to hand more power to corporations and lower regulatory standards between the EU and the US, at untold environmental cost. As we enter a new era of trade, do we know the full implications of our actions?

Being completely student-led, PIEL UK strives to achieve a balance between those who are affected by, and those who practise in the laws that can promote environmental justice. The PIEL UK Conference provides an accessible forum for discussion, deliberation and debate. This allows a diverse range of practitioners, academics and members of the public to engage with problems relating to the environment and to encourage solutions. By increasing public awareness of the role that law can play, the Conference aims to foster environmental justice in the UK and further afield.

Speakers of the 9th Annual Conference include: Professor Nicolas de Sadeleer  of Facultés Universitaires Saint Louis Brussels, Professor Margaret Bates of the University of Northampton, Piotr Barczak of the European Environmental Bureau, Tom Burke of Third Generation Environmentalism (E3G), Samuel Lowe of Friends of the Earth and Alan Bates of Monckton Chambers.

The Conference will be followed by an evening drinks reception where attendees will be able to engage in discussions with the speakers and will also be a fantastic networking opportunity.
