Job Description

A vacancy has arisen within the strategic programme directorate, interim end state delivery department for a characterisation manager.

Characterisation plays a vital role in the decommissioning of facilities on the Dounreay site. It is the basis for planning, identification of the extent and nature of contamination, assessing potential risk impacts, cost estimation, implementation of decommissioning framework, radiation protection, worker protection, protection of the environment, and management of material arising from decommissioning, as well as supporting decisions for release of buildings and site from regulatory control.

The purpose of the post is to provide a technical lead to manage, support and/or deliver characterisation programme activities across the site.

Key responsibilities:

• Provide characterisation advice to internal and external stakeholders and regulators, including:

• Inferred characterisation (radiological):
• Non-destructive assay (radiological and non-radiological):
• Sampling and analysis (radiological and non-radiological

• Manages the technical aspects of all characterisation projects, including technical support and advice, managing the interface with customers in projects to understand and deliver their characterisation requirements in a timely manner.
• Manage, support and/or deliver characterisation programme activities across the site.
• Manage the preparation, approval, and issue of reports through review to implementation
• Owns and manages site processes relating to characterisation and radionuclide fingerprint development - sets and maintains the site management system documents and standards relating to characterisation, identifying, and implementing best industry practice. Documentation can include standards, procedures, templates, and toolkits.
• Establish requirements for instrumentation, fingerprints, activity assessments and data quality objectives
• Review and report on identified problems and incidents, establishing causes, and identifying, recommending, and implementing solutions
• Interface with internal and external stakeholders and the site's regulators including NDA, SEPA, ONR and IAEA
• Mentor Dounreay staff on all aspects of characterisation
• Manage the provision of site training on characterisation
• Represent Dounreay at internal and external characterisation forums
• Perform the responsibilities of management appointments relevant to post. Be appointed to RWA corporate body

Qualifications, aptitudes and experience:

• Degree in science or equivalent qualification plus experience
• Proven experience in both nuclear characterisation and NDA
• Experience managing and maintaining nuclear management systems
• Working knowledge and experience of relevant legislation
