Membership

Membership Criteria

In line with many other professional bodies there are three grades of membership for the Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM) - Associate, Member (MIAQM) and Fellow (FIAQM).  We are looking for applicants to be able to demonstrate their practical ability and understanding in the field of air quality management.  Applicants outside of the UK who may hold academic qualifications that are not familiar or consistent with UK universities are also welcomed.

If you are not already a member of the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES), you will need to apply for IES membership at the same time as you apply for IAQM membership.  Some additional information relating to your specialist experience in air quality management is required to enable acceptance by IAQM.  In summary, the IAQM application procedure is:

  • Obtain IES (www.ies-uk.org.uk) and IAQM (www.iaqm.co.uk) application forms.
  • Complete and return both forms to IES at Suite 7, 38 Ebury Street, London SW1W 0LU with the initial application fee (formerly Suite 1);
  • IES and IAQM separately assess your membership grade.  If your application form does not provide sufficient information to satisfy the Member grade requirements, we may request additional information concerning your skills and knowledge - possibly through a telephone interview.  It is possible that you could be a full IES member but not have sufficient relevant experience for IAQM – we would then admit you at Associate grade until you obtain the required level of experience;
  • You will then receive joint notification of your IES and IAQM membership grades and an invoice for membership fees;
  • Upon payment of the membership fee, you will be sent separately your IES and IAQM certificates and other membership information.

Membership Grades

Associate - Any person, regardless of experience or background, may apply for Associate membership. This grade would be of value to those with a general interest in air quality but not necessarily working in the subject and would be appropriate for students, non-graduates and other interested parties seeking to improve their skills and knowledge. Typical applicants might include environmental organisations, private companies and members of the public. There is no title associated with this membership grade.

Member - Every candidate for election to the class of Member shall have:

  • a relevant degree or demonstration of an equivalent educational level
  • at least three years full-time equivalent experience in air quality management, air quality policy, research, monitoring, modelling, emission inventories and other related and relevant areas which shall satisfy the Membership Committee.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate to the Membership Committee that they have the required educational background, work experience and application of those skills in the field of air quality.

Fellow - every candidate for election to the class of Fellow of the Institute of Air Quality Management shall be a distinguished person intimately connected with air quality management, or a science connected to it.  Every candidate shall have a relevant degree or demonstration of an equivalent educational level; at least ten years full-time equivalent experience in air quality management, air quality policy, research, monitoring, modelling, emission inventories and other related and relevant areas which shall satisfy the Membership Committee; Be working in a position of responsibility within Air Quality.  The required qualifications and experience will be at the discretion of the Membership Committee.
