ABOUT US

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions each year by processing and issuing DBS checks for England, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. DBS also maintains the Adults’ and Children’s Barred Lists, and makes considered decisions as to whether an individual should be included on one or both of these lists and barred from engaging in regulated activity.

Our disclosure teams carry out DBS checks (previously known as CRB, or criminal record checks).

There are four types of DBS check, and each type results in a DBS certificate being issued to an individual. Employers can then ask to see the certificate to ensure that they are recruiting suitable people into their organisation.

The four levels of DBS check are:

- Basic DBS check
- Standard DBS check
- Enhanced DBS check
- Enhanced with Barred List(s) DBS check

Who we work with

DBS works with a number of different organisations and departments, including but not limited to:

- Police forces in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man – the police provide information that is held locally, or on the Police National Computer
- ACRO Criminal Records Office (ACRO) – manages criminal record information and improves the exchange of criminal records and biometric information
- Responsible Organisations – a Responsible Organisation is an organisation that is registered with DBS to submit Basic DBS checks
- Registered Bodies - a Registered Body is an organisation that is registered with DBS to submit Standard, Enhanced, and Enhanced with Barred Lists DBS checks

WORKING FOR DBS

DBS offers a range of careers, from working with the public to roles supporting operational areas of the business.

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) issues more than 4 million DBS checks every year, providing information to employers and organisations, so they can prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups including children.

We also make complex decisions about whether to bar somebody from getting jobs in certain sectors. There are currently circa 80,000 people who are not allowed to work with children or vulnerable adults.

Our disclosure office is based in Liverpool, and our barring office is based in Darlington.

In addition to a base salary, we offer a range of benefits including:

- generous annual leave allowance
- excellent maternity, paternity, adoption and sickness benefit schemes (after a qualifying period)
- commitment to the health and wellbeing of our staff
- employee assistance programme
- flexible working opportunities
- childcare voucher scheme
- eyecare voucher scheme
- cycle-to-work scheme

We also offer a range of support and social groups to our employees.

Our recruitment processes are underpinned by the principle of selection for appointment on merit on the basis of fair and open competition.
