Climate change is fast becoming one of the greatest risks to operators across the global build environment. At Arup we work collaboratively across disciplines and geographies to ensure our clients are getting cutting edge advice, which begins from the need to integrate sustainable development into the heart of all we do, to deliver the broadest range of positive outcomes possible - delivering impact at scale.

We have recently committed to conducting whole lifecycle carbon assessments on all buildings we work on, and will withdraw from fossil fuel projects in April 2022. 

As part of our drive to shape a better world, we are looking to grow our Climate & Sustainability offering, and have a range of opportunities available for Climate Change Consultants, of all grades, across the UK.

We understand that applicants will come from a range of backgrounds with differing years of experience, we are looking for candidates that can demonstrate they are passionate, enthusiastic and have prior experience in the field of climate change.  

The Role(s): 

We are looking for candidates to join our teams based in offices around the UK, to support our growing portfolio of projects in the infrastructure, buildings and advisory sectors. At its core, your role will help to deliver low carbon, climate-resilient and circular outcomes into the projects we deliver. Some of the projects/skills you will have experience in may include: 

• Climate change impact and risk assessments; 
• Climate change resilience assessments and advisory; 
• Climate change and Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions assessments  
• Climate change strategy and policy advisory; 
• Climate financing advisory, cost benefit assessment, offset design; 
• Circular economy business model development and design strategy; 
• Environmental Impact Assessment submissions; 

As a Senior Climate Change Consultant, you will work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary group of specialists and project managers around the UK and beyond. Depending on your grade and past experience, you will have a strong understanding of the field of environment and sustainability, together with strong report writing, organisation and communication skills. The collaborative nature of the role requires strong interpersonal skills to work well with others, including providing guidance and mentorship to junior members. A recognition of the socio-economic issues that pervade our work is desirable, in order to help us deliver a just transition through all of our projects. 

Skills & Qualifications 

Some of the skills and qualifications you might be expected to have are listed below, dependent on your grade. If you don’t tick all of these boxes don’t worry, we’d still love to hear from you. 

• Bachelor or masters qualification in a relevant field, such as Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Geography, Climate Change or Sustainability (or equivalent experience).  
• Appropriate chartership, or working towards – e.g. Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv). 
• Previous experience and track record in advising public and private sector clients on options, risks and appropriate actions to make choices and mitigate risks; carbon accounting and management, low carbon and climate resilient policy and strategy development, training and engagement to support low carbon and climate resilient decision-making.  
• Previous experience leading climate change/GHG assessments and accounting, including mitigation measures. 
• Previous experience using carbon planning and/or footprinting tools, and assessing climate hazards and risks and identifying adaptation and resilience solutions 
• An understanding of GHG/carbon modelling, reporting and standards as well as EIA and ability to justify/discuss the significance.  
• Knowledge of relevant UK and European policy, legislative, regulatory and planning frameworks and guidance. 
• Previous experience in preparing commercial bids / bid responses, winning work etc. 
• Project and commercial management experience, including project planning and budgeting.
