Waste Commissioning Team Leader

As Waste Commissioning Team Leader you will use your management and leadership skills to lead, develop and co-ordinate strategic thinking, planning and delivery to meet the business goals.

The Waste Commissioning Team Leader will contribute to long term strategies using broad principles considered as part of business planning activities ensuring long term organisational needs are identified and met.

You will need to feel comfortable and ambitious working with ambiguity and anticipate changing customer needs over the short to long term and deliver change.

About us

The role sits within the Strategic Waste Management and Enforcement service. The team works collaboratively to undertake options appraisals, procure new waste service contracts, lead and deliver waste capital schemes, policy strategy reviews, behaviour change campaigns manage a number of multi-million-pound waste contracts (e.g. energy from waste, household recycling centres) and lead and deliver new waste infrastructure projects.

Within the team includes fly-tipping, unlawful encampments, and traveller community enforcement. Collectively the team are involved in a wide range of work from enforcement to contract management, procurements, communications, internal business/systems improvements, behaviour change projects and customer service. Working within the wider team means there are plenty of opportunities for learning and development in both a formal and informal capacity.

About the role

In this role, you will be providing a leadership and management role across Strategic Waste Management and Enforcement Service. You will have direct line management of a team of staff, external multi-disciplined professional advisors and/or matrix manage people aligned to your work delivery plans from across the organisation. You’ll have experience of setting monitoring and reporting performance standards/measures for example managing people and business plans whilst maximising service outcomes in relation to time, cost and quality to customers and business performance.

Naturally, you’ll have excellent interpersonal, persuasion, and negotiation influence skills to manage communications with stakeholders at all organisational levels. You’ll have a proven ability to build relationships, engage effectively and influence stakeholders, supplier management, as well as communicating changes in policy and strategies.

About you

You’ll come to us with experience of leading and managing a team of people, delivering programmes and/or projects, a background in a relevant industry including waste management and educated to degree level or equivalent. You will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of policy/ strategy development, together with an ability to lead business planning including financial management.

You will be an enthusiastic, self-motivated and organised person to join our busy team. Be able to demonstrate initiative and the ability to manage complex plans, prioritise and coordinate resources to deliver business priorities within time constraints. You will be able to write and present complex information suitably for a varied audience including public arenas. Proven track record of successful delivery and management of programs/projects for example waste transfer stations, household recycling centres and life cycle replacements of plant, equipment, vehicles used in the waste sector.

Knowledge and understanding of key waste management, construction, legislation and national policies will be an advantage. More importantly, you will demonstrate leadership and management skills, be an excellent communicator, organiser, commercially aware, use your own initiative and be solution-focused.

Please note that access to your own vehicle is an essential requirement for the role as there will be a need to travel across the county to various locations and sites.
